hp officejet pro 7740
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Dear community,

have a new hp officejet pro 7740 printer with latest windows drivers and firmware updates that works overall well. 🙂

My probem while scanning with higher resolutions than 300 (600 and more) is:

1. I scan and select a certain area of the image (picture or document) to save

2. Then the scanner repeats scanning and scans a totally different area.

This happens with all possible settings (color, b/w, ...) and independend of where I put the scan object.

This only happens with higher resolutions. With resolutions up to 300 dpi scanning just works fine - the autoselection of objects and the manuel selection as well.

Thanks in advance.

Greetings and Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Don't worry, I'm here to help! To better assist you - Are you scanning from the ADF or flatbed?

If it is an ADF, try switching to the flatbed and check.

While you respond to that, let's try these steps -

1) Turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
2) Wait until the printer is idle and silent.
3) With the printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.
3) Wait for 60 seconds.
4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not to a surge protector.
5) Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

Also, try updating the printer's firmware. Refer to this document to know more - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

Hope this helps!

Let me know how that goes.

Hi Asmita,

thanks for your reply but it did not help.

I allready updated all software and drivers (including the firmware of the printer itself).

The problem only occurs with the flatbed (because the ADF doesn't support resolutions above 300 dpi).

The problem occurs if I scan fotos / docs with resolutions 600 or 1,200 dpi selecting format "in" (I don't have the English interface) either "auto select fotos" or "entire area".  Then the scanner does a pre-scan frist, then I select an area I want to save and klick "save", then the scanner scans a second time with the higher resolution and saves the picture(s). But it saves other than the selected araes (even if I don't do anything and just confirm the auto-selected areas.) The preview window shoews the right selection but the scanner saves the something else. Independend if I choose PDF or JPG as file format.

Hi Chris,

Please install HP Scan Extended and check if you may see any difference using this application instead:

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/scanners/HPScanExt/HPScanExt.msi

The application will be installed under the Start Menu > HP

Hi,

thanks for trying to help.

I successfully installed the program. With this scanning above 300 dpi now causes the scan interface either to force close while saving the file or it stucks in a loop while scanning.

As I installed the latest HP software on a brand new computer with a brand new hp printer/scanner either the unit or the software is defective.

Apart from scanning above 300 dpi is not properly working, the b/w scan quality for docs is disappointing.

I used an Epson unit since 7 years that works flawless until today and even this old printer/scanner has a much better b/w scan quality than this HP one.

I will return this to Amazon and buy something else.

Thanks for your efforts and best regards
