HP OfficeJet Pro 8028e All-in-One Printer works with Safari browser but does not work with Chrome browser. When I try to print something the preview keeps saying it is loading and if I hit 'print' the job never reaches the printer. It appears the old extension HP print for Chrome is no longer available. I have tried restarting the printer and browser.

@John1544,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Since printing works correctly from Safari, the printer itself, its network connection, and the basic printer driver are likely functioning normally. The issue appears to be specific to Google Chrome.

A few things to try:

  1. Test Chrome's system print dialog
    • In Chrome, open the page you want to print.
    • Press Command + P.
    • If the preview remains stuck on "Loading preview," look for "Print using system dialog..." and try printing from there.
  2. Clear Chrome's cache
    • Chrome > Settings > Privacy and Security > Clear Browsing Data.
    • Clear cached images/files, then restart Chrome.
  3. Disable Hardware Acceleration
    • Chrome > Settings > System.
    • Turn off Use graphics acceleration when available.
    • Relaunch Chrome and test printing again.
  4. Check for duplicate printer entries
    • Open System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
    • Remove any old or duplicate printer instances.
    • Verify the OfficeJet Pro 8028e is using AirPrint or the HP driver rather than a generic driver.
  5. Try Chrome Incognito Mode
    • Open an Incognito window and test printing.
    • If printing works there, a Chrome extension or profile setting may be causing the problem.

To help narrow this down further:

  • Which version of macOS are you using?
  • Does the issue occur on all websites or only certain pages/PDFs?
  • Does Chrome's print preview eventually load, or does it remain stuck indefinitely?

Kind Regards,

Hello,

"Print using system dialog..." works however I have tried all other suggestions to get the simple command + P function to work without going through print using system dialog and have not found any luck. The print preview remains stuck loading and this happens on all sites. This Mac OS is Sonoma 14.7.5

thank you!

@John1544,

Since the "Print using system dialog..." bypass works, the root cause may be a corruption inside Google Chrome's local communication layer or its cached print preferences profile on macOS Sonoma 14.7.5.

Because standard cache clears and incognito mode did not fix it, the internal preference schema or the browser's PDF compositor process is stuck.

Reset Chrome's Print Preference Schema:

Chrome stores a hidden profile ledger that caches the physical dimensions, margins, and capabilities of your HP OfficeJet Pro 8028e. If this file gets corrupted, the internal print engine hangs indefinitely trying to parse it.

  1. Quit Google Chrome completely by pressing Command + Q.
  2. Open the Finder app.
  3. Press Command + Shift + G to open the "Go to Folder" search bar.
  4. Paste the following exact file path and press Enter:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default
  5. Locate the file named Preferences (it has no file extension).
  6. Right-click the file and select Move to Trash.
  7. Relaunch Chrome and try a standard Command + P. Chrome will automatically regenerate a clean version of this file, which usually forces the print preview engine to start fresh.

Please Note: Deleting this file will reset minor browser configuration settings (such as tab behaviors or specific site permissions), but your sync data, bookmarks, and passwords will remain safe.

Automate the System Dialog Bypass:

If you prefer not to wait for Chrome to generate the preview, or if the step above does not stick, you can permanently change Chrome's default behavior on your Mac so that pressing Command + P instantly pulls up the working macOS system print layout instead of Chrome's broken one.

  1. Open the Terminal application on your Mac (press Command + Space, type "Terminal", and hit Enter).
  2. Copy and paste the following command exactly as written: -use code with caution:
defaults write com.google.Chrome DisablePrintPreview -bool true
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Restart Google Chrome. Now, standard printing commands will completely skip Chrome's native preview panel and go straight to the working system dialog box.
(To undo this change in the future, run the same command but replace true with false at the end).

Flush and Re-Add the AirPrint Driver:

Apparently, sometimes macOS Sonoma fails to communicate paper configurations smoothly to third-party Chromium apps. Refreshing the connection protocol clears this out:

  1. Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  2. Click on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8028e and select Remove Printer.
  3. Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax... at the bottom.
  4. Select your HP printer from the network list.
  5. In the "Use" drop-down menu at the bottom, ensure AirPrint or Secure AirPrint is selected rather than an outdated HP utility driver. Click Add.

If you'd like to dive deeper, let me know:

  • Did resetting the Preferences file or using the Terminal command successfully restore your quick printing shortcut?
  • Are you running any third-party antivirus or firewall software on this Mac that might be intercepting local network calls?

Kind Regards,
