No, I'm saying I have never seen HP Smart work with a USB connected printer / computer.

Never even tried it.

HP Smart -- many of the features of the app - require the application and the printer to have access to the network "together".

"At least scan" also tips the HP Smart app in the direction of needing network access for the printer.,

So - No, I'm not saying it will NOT work -- I'm saying I can't see how it would work.

If you have not done so,

Try / Consider...

======================================================

Restart "your stuff"

Start here:

Restart Everything, including the router that controls your network

That might be enough (at least short term) -- check...

============================================================

- Printer Application - HP Smart -

Try / Consider

Check / Run Windows Updates > Install any pending updates

Next,

If not previously completed,

Restart everything, including the router that controls your network.

Next,

Open and Check HP Smart

If the HP Smart opens but does not work or hangs partly open > Close the HP Smart App.

If you cannot stop HP Smart, Restart the computer and log in > Do not restart HP Smart yet.

No Joy?

Reset HP Smart Application - Windows

Next,

Reset the HP Smart application - This action removes the app data.

Windows 10 -

Settings > Apps > Apps and Features

Windows 11 -

Settings > Apps > Installed Apps

Search and Find HP Smart in the apps list

Open Advanced options > Reset the app

Restart the computer and log in

Open HP Smart > Sign in > Add Printer(s)

If the app Reset does not work by itself,

Next,

Uninstall the HP Smart App from Settings > Apps > Apps and Features / Installed Apps

Restart the computer and log in

“Get” a new copy of the HP Smart application from the Microsoft Store

Open HP Smart > Sign in > Add Printer(s)

Example - Windows - Check / Reset / Reload HP Smart

True - not having control of the network means some things are just not possible.

That said, if you are using a USB cable between the computer and the printer, restarting the router is a moot point.

Without a connection outside of the USB, mobile devices do not work with the printer.

That leaves restarting the printer and the computer.

I've read that HP Smart works with a USB connection -- I've never seen it.

Sure,  the HP Smart Reset might also be impacted when using a USB cable.

What?  The application Reset removes the user account data  (in your account on your computer) that the application uses to determine version and operability.  Not sure how -- or if -- HP Smart > Reset responds to a USB connected printer setup.

At the moment, I am out of ideas.

You are welcome.

If the user is interested in doing so...

It is possible to just go around the whole issue and not use HP Smart.

Install the Full Feature Software

The full driver does not have trouble with a USB connected printer and computer -- plus, as long as the user is not trying to use (for example) HP Scan > Send as Email,  there is no sign in.

=========================

Printer - Full Feature Software - Install

and

HP Scan

If you have not done so, consider

  • HP Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software - supports printing and scanning from the web, printing in in other software and programs (for example, Word), and provides access to the full range of Printing Preferences / Shortcuts.  The full driver adds at least two shortcuts to the Desktop:  Printer Assistant and HP Scan.  If the printer model includes built-in Fax hardware, the software supports the setup and use of the Fax driver.  No Sign-in required.

If the software is already installed and you want to "reinstall":

Uninstall the printer software from Programs and Features

Restart the computer and log in

Check that all the pieces of the printer software have been removed - if anything is deleted, Restart computer and log in

Next,

Download, Save, (then) Install new copy of the printer software

After the software in installed, Restart the computer and log in
