I have the same printer.
Put in the full feature driver for the 500 series.
Select either the ARM or the Intel/AMD driver. It is the "for offline use"
then install
You will have 3 ways to scan. One is the HP App, the other two are "HP Scan" but the icons are different. All can be used.
First install the full feature software
After installing the full feature driver package, click the windows key and select all apps and find HP.
Look for HP Scan.
If HP scan is not present then use the new HP App or get the Universal HP Scan tool If you want to do optical character recognition then:

The following video is an example of how to put an app on the desktop.
This is a video for the support assistant desktop icon here
You can do this for any App. You can drag and drop it to the windows task bar, not just the desktop.
Please let me know what you find out.
Question: Does the HP App (or HP Smart) show ink usage on your 5101? On my 5101, I see %100 full reported for all 4 bottles but I can clearly see some of the yellow ink has been used looking at the tank viewer.
