I am a new admin on an HP Tango X printer. I need to restore factory defaults so I can set up a new admin password and link it to my account. I used the button on the back to manually restore factory defaults but now I'm trying to add this printer to my account but unfortunately neither my phone nor my MacBook can see the printer. please help!

Hi @drwhirlybirch

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for the detailed context—you're on the right track. Since you've already used the physical reset button on the back of the HP Tango X, the printer should now be in its factory default state.

However, if your devices (phone and MacBook) can't detect it, here’s how to proceed:

Step-by-Step Recovery & Setup

1. Ensure the Printer Is in Setup Mode

After a factory reset, the printer should enter setup mode automatically. You’ll know it’s ready if:

  • The blue wireless light is blinking.
  • The printer is silent and idle (not processing any jobs).

If not blinking:

  • Press and hold the Wireless button on the back until the blue light starts blinking again.

2. Connect via HP Smart App

Use the HP Smart app to reconfigure the printer:

On your phone or MacBook:

  • Download or open the HP Smart app
  • Make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled
  • Open the app and tap “+” to add a new printer
  • Select your HP Tango X from the list (it should appear if in setup mode)
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to connect it to your Wi-Fi and HP account

If it doesn’t appear, try moving closer to the printer and restarting Bluetooth/Wi-Fi.

3. Reset Network Settings (If Still Not Detected)

If the printer still isn’t showing up:

  • Press and hold the Wireless button + Power button together for about 10 seconds
  • Wait for the blue light to blink rapidly—this resets the network settings
  • Try the HP Smart app setup again

4. Set New Admin Password

Once connected:

  • In the HP Smart app, go to Settings > Printer Settings > Security
  • Set a new admin password and link the printer to your HP account

Additional Tips

  • Use 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi (HP Tango doesn’t support 5 GHz)
  • Avoid VPNs or firewalls during setup
  • If using a MacBook, ensure Location Services are enabled for HP Smart

If you’re still stuck, I can walk you through a manual IP-based setup or help check for firmware issues. Just let me know what step it’s failing on.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
