Hi @laserjet1136

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing the detailed symptoms and for already checking the connection and print progress—your effort is truly appreciated.

The HP LaserJet M1136 MFP is not currently listed as receiving new macOS driver updates, and printing issues like yours may stem from compatibility gaps or driver miscommunication.

When the printer shows as connected and the print job completes without output, it often signals a communication or driver-level issue between macOS and the printer.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you resolve this:

1. Remove and Re-add the Printer

Sometimes macOS holds onto outdated or misconfigured printer queues.

  • Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners
  • Select HP LaserJet M1136, then click Remove Printer (-)
  • Click Add Printer (+) and wait for the printer to appear
  • Choose HP LaserJet M1136 and ensure the correct driver is selected (not AirPrint or Generic)

2. Download and Install the Latest Driver

HP does not provide full-feature drivers for all macOS versions for this model. If your macOS version is not listed, the printer may rely on built-in macOS support, which can be limited.

  • Visit the official HP driver page:
HP LaserJet Pro M1136 MFP Software and Drivers
  • Select your macOS version manually from the dropdown
  • Download and install any available HP Easy Start or Printer Driver

3. Reset Printing System (if issue persists)

This clears all printer settings and queues.

  • Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners
  • Right-click (or Control-click) in the printer list and choose Reset printing system
  • Re-add the printer as described above

4. Check Toner and Hardware Readiness

Even if the printer shows as ready, ensure:

  • The toner cartridge is not empty or improperly seated
  • There are no paper jams or misfeeds
  • The output tray is not blocked
  • The printer is not in an error state (check for blinking lights or error codes)

5. Test with HP Smart App (HP App)

Although the HP LaserJet M1136 is not fully supported in the HP App, installing it can help detect and communicate with the printer.

  • Download from the Mac App Store: HP App
  • Open the app and check if the printer appears and allows test prints or scanning

6. Try USB Connection (if using wireless)

If you're currently using a wireless or network connection, try connecting the printer via USB directly to your MacBook. This can help isolate whether the issue is network-related.

7. Firmware Updates

There are no recent firmware updates listed for this model. However, you can check manually:

  • On the same HP support page select your OS and look under Firmware section
  • If available, follow the instructions to update

If the issue continues after these steps, we can explore additional print system logs or test from another Mac to isolate the cause. Let’s keep going until we get that satisfying hum of paper rolling out.

Hi @laserjet1136

Thank you for your persistence and for already trying every recommended step. It’s genuinely disappointing when a well-functioning printer becomes unusable simply due to software limitations on a newer macOS.

You’ve done everything right, and I completely understand your frustration.

Here’s how you can attempt printing using macOS’s built-in driver support:

Steps to Print Using Built-in macOS Drivers

Remove Existing Printer Setup

  • Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners
  • Select your HP LaserJet M1136 and click the minus sign (-) to remove it

Add Printer Using Built-in Driver

  • Click the plus sign (+) to add a printer
  • Wait for your printer to appear in the list (USB connection is most reliable)
  • Select the printer, then look at the “Use” or “Driver” dropdown
  • Choose “Secure AirPrint” or “Generic PostScript Printer” if available
    • If neither appears, select “Generic PCL Printer” or “Generic Printer”
  • Click Add

Print a Test Page

  • Open any document (e.g., in Preview or TextEdit)
  • Go to File > Print
  • Select your newly added printer and try printing

Adjust Print Settings

  • If the output is blank or distorted, go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners
  • Select your printer > Options & Supplies > Driver
  • Try switching between Generic PostScript and Generic PCL if available

Use HP App for Scanning

  • While printing may rely on built-in drivers, scanning can still be accessed via the HP App from the Mac App Store

This method relies on macOS’s internal print protocols and may not support advanced features, but it often restores basic printing functionality. If the printer still doesn’t respond, it confirms that the driver layer is no longer compatible with your macOS version.

You’ve shown great patience and technical skill.

Keep me posted on the outcome.
