Hi,

Please follow below version of HP Easy Start, as soon as it launches open the top HP Easy Start menu and select Uninstall HP Software.

Follow the steps on screen and then click on Set Up New Device and follow the steps to reinstall the printer:

I did what you said. hp easy start again directs me to the hp smart app. and this app still can't find my printer. Thanks so much for your help but I guess I can't handle the problem myself.  I think I'll call hp authorized service tomorrow

Did you use the link included in my post? there are several HP Easy Start versions, if you may have a file already saved to your Mac, be sure to download the file included in my link.

If that fails, download and manually install the driver via HP Easy Admin for your printer, then add the printer and be sure to select the printer model within the Use drop-down menu:
