I have no problem connecting to the Embedded Web server for my HP Envy 5540 printer. But all pages that require a redirect to a secure page (https connection) timeout. This failure occurs with all browsers: Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. The error in all cases is:
This site can’t be reached hp-5540 took too long to respond.
Try:
Checking the connection
Checking the proxy and the firewall
Running Windows Network Diagnostics
ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT
Is the firmware (NBP1CN2023AR) on this printer too old?

Welcome to the HP Community -- a Peer-to-Peer Forum for people who use HP Technology
Browser security does not typically recognize a local network addresses.
This "I don't see you" response might cause the browser to balk, hang, issue warnings, or outright fail when it encounters an address it cannot open.
Browser security is in charge of what the browser will open / tolerate.
"Printer / Printer Firmware too old" ??
Sure, maybe -- I don't have a printer of this age or type.
I suspect the printer age is not related.
Printer Firmware is not ancient - last update was in 2020.
An example of a local URL / printer IP address used with the Embedded Web Server (EWS)
https://192.168.2.16
Some browsers let you go through with a warning, some let you add and exception, some freak out and won't deal with the local address at all.
I don't have any pass through issues with Firefox -- Chrome might be a different story but I don't use it.
Edge complains and balks with a message -- Edge does eventually acquiesce after clicking Advanced and Continue - it does plant a big "Not secure" warning next to the URL and strips the https: from the address

Firefox has the same problem as Chrome and Edge. Firefox response is:
The connection has timed out
An error occurred during a connection to 192.168.1.156.
The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer’s network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the web.
I can start the session without a secure connection, but as soon as the menu choice redirects to a secure connection, all 3 browsers timeout.

Understood - our experiences are completely different.
If you have Firefox HTTPS-Only Mode enabled, try disabling .
Ignore if not relevant.
If I think of anything else to add or update, I'll post back.

My setting in Firefox is Don’t enable HTTPS-Only Mode.
I tried turning off Query OCSP responder servers to confirm the current validity of certificates, but it made no difference.
Firefox version is 113.0.1 (64 bit)
