Hi @stephen1012,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding setup issues for the HP ENVY 5540 All-in-One Printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Check Compatibility:

Correct Serial Number Entry:

  • Double-check that you are entering the correct serial number for your printer. Ensure there are no spaces and that you are using the right characters (e.g., avoid confusing 0 with O).

Download Latest Software and Drivers:

  • Make sure you have downloaded the latest printer drivers and setup software directly from the HP Support page for HP ENVY 5540.
  • Use the software specific to Windows 11, if available.

Use HP Smart App:

  • Download the HP Smart App from the Windows Store. This application often simplifies the setup process and may bypass the issues you’re facing with the traditional setup.
  • Follow the instructions within the HP Smart App to set up your printer.

Use HP Printer Assistant:

  • Open HP Printer Assistant software which might already be installed or can be downloaded from the HP website.
  • Attempt setting up your printer using this software.

Update Firmware:

  • Make sure the printer firmware is up to date. This can be done through HP Printer Assistant or through the printer's embedded web server.

Perform Hard Reset on the Printer:

  • Turn off your printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on.

I hope this helps.
