The printer was online to wifi initially (i.e., the blue light was flashing before it timed out). Multiple power cycles were of no help in getting the wifi setup restored on the printer.

@Owey2, Welcome to the HP Support Community – it’s great to have you here!

I appreciate you taking the time to share your question. I'm more than happy to assist with this and provide a solution that works for you.

I understand you're having trouble reconnecting your HP OfficeJet Pro 8028e to Wi-Fi, and the control panel isn't allowing you to restore the Wi-Fi setup. Let's walk through a few steps to get your printer back online.

Reset the Network Settings

Since the control panel isn’t allowing access to restore Wi-Fi setup, let’s try a manual network reset:

  • On the printer control panel, swipe down to open the Dashboard.
  • Tap the Setup (gear icon) > Network Setup > Restore Network Settings.
  • Confirm the reset. This will clear all previous Wi-Fi settings.

Reconnect to Wi-Fi Using HP Smart App

Once the network settings are reset:

  • Download and install the HP Smart app from the Microsoft Store or HP Smart official page. HP Smart
  • Open the app and click Set up a new printer.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to connect your printer to Wi-Fi.

Ensure your PC is connected to the same Wi-Fi network you want the printer to join.

Check Router Settings

  • Make sure your router is broadcasting on 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz.
  • Disable MAC address filtering or add your printer’s MAC address to the allowed list.
  • Restart your router and try the setup again.

Use WPS (if available)

If your router supports WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup):

  • On the printer, go to Setup > Network Setup > Wireless Settings > Wi-Fi Protected Setup.
  • Select Push Button, then press the WPS button on your router.
  • Wait for the printer to connect.

Perform a Reset (if needed)

If the control panel is unresponsive or you can't access network settings:

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
  2. Wait for 60 seconds.
  3. Press and hold the Power button, then plug in the power cord while still holding the button.
  4. Continue holding the button for 15 seconds, then release.
  5. The printer should power on and reset.

I hope your issue is now resolved. If not, feel free to reply and we’ll continue helping until everything’s sorted!

Hi, Max3Aj.

Thanks much for your reply. The last step in your reply was the key to solving my particular issue (i.e. "Perform a reset (if needed)"), as my printer control panel was completely unresponsive and would not allow me to access the settings to restore wifi setup. After doing the power reset in the manner suggested, I was able to access the printer control panel and complete all the necessary steps to get the printer online and the software installed.
