Hi Barco525

No, you generally do not need to be registered for HP Instant Ink for your HP printer to work.

Your HP printer can function perfectly well using standard HP ink cartridges purchased traditionally at a store or online.

However, there are two very important points you must consider:

  1. HP+ Printers ('e' Series):

    • If you purchased an HP+ printer (often identified with an 'e' at the end of the model number, e.g., OfficeJet Pro 9018e), these printers require you to enroll in Instant Ink and create an HP account to complete the initial setup and allow you to print.

    • In some of these models, if you do not enroll during the initial setup, the printer might be locked until you do, or it may only work with Instant Ink cartridges.

  2. Instant Ink Cartridges:

    • The cartridges you receive through the HP Instant Ink service are special and only work while your subscription is active. If you cancel the service, those cartridges will stop functioning, even if they still have ink. At that point, you must buy and install standard HP cartridges.

In summary:

  • If you use store-bought cartridges (not Instant Ink): You can use your printer without a subscription.

  • If you have an HP+ ('e') printer: Yes, the initial setup often compels you to enroll in Instant Ink (though you can cancel later if you wish, but you will need to buy your own standard cartridges).

I hope the above is helpful!
