Setting up my 4-year old printer - an HP Desk Jet 4100e model printer and upon set-up, it was asking for the pin number and when I typed it in, it was showing an invalid number.  Help!!! I dont understand - is my printer old already and HP is not supporting it anymore?

Hi @Alan351,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for reaching out, and no worries, your HP DeskJet 4100e series printer is still supported, and we can definitely get this sorted out.

When your printer asks for a PIN during setup, it’s usually referring to the Wi-Fi setup PIN or WPS PIN, which is used to securely connect the printer to your network.

Where to Find the PIN

  1. Check the Printer Label
Look for a label on the back or bottom of the printer. It may say:
    • Wi-Fi Direct Name and Password
    • Or show a WPS PIN

  2. Print the Information Page. You can print a page that includes the PIN:
    • Press and hold the Information (i) button until the control panel lights blink.
    • This will print a Network Configuration Page or Information Sheet.
    • Look for the WPS PIN or Wi-Fi Direct password on that page.

  3. Use HP App Setup. If you're using the HP App – For HP Printers, Laptops, and Tech Accessories | HP® Official Site, it will guide you through setup and automatically detect the PIN if needed.

If the PIN Is Rejected

  • Make sure you're entering the WPS PIN, not the serial number or Wi-Fi password.

  • The PIN is time-sensitive; it expires after a few minutes. If it doesn’t work, restart the printer and try again.

  • If all else fails, you can reset the printer’s network settings
    • Press and hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons together for 5 seconds.
    • This will restore Wi-Fi setup mode so you can try again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
