HP Smart Tank 7001 All-in-One

After setting up my new printer, I continue to see the icons for the print heads flashing in the window. Does this mean the print heads are defective?

@Theoldbard, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printhead issue!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Flashing print head icons on your HP Smart Tank 7001 All-in-One printer do not necessarily mean the print heads are defective. Here are a few troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue:

Check Print Head Installation

  • Make sure the print heads are properly installed in their designated slots.
  • Open the printer lid, remove and reseat both the black and tri-color print heads securely.

Remove Any Protective Tape

  • If you just set up the printer, ensure that you have removed any orange protective tape from the print heads.

Check Ink Levels

  • Low or empty ink tanks can sometimes cause errors. Make sure all ink tanks have enough ink.

Restart the Printer

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from power, wait for about 60 seconds, and then restart it.

Perform a Print Head Alignment

  • On the printer control panel, navigate to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Align Print Heads.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.

Update Firmware

  • Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer through the HP Smart app.

Reset the Printer

  • If the issue persists, try a printer reset:
    1. Turn on the printer.
    2. Unplug the power cord while it's still on.
    3. Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

I hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
