Hi:

Try the 2nd driver file from the Microsoft update catalog.  I checked it out using the 7-zip file utility, and it contains 64 bit drivers.

Dear Mr. Tikkanen,

THANK YOU SO MUCH.  I had the same question and  Google referred me to your answer.  You saved me a LOT of aggravation.

BTW, the driver seems to work well for Windows 10, too.

You're very welcome.

Thank you for your reply for installing a HP Laserjet 4L. I to downloaded the drivers that yousuggested butI have a problem.(1) I can't find a exe file to start the installation. (2) my printer is connected directly by cable. (3) I have never had this printer installed on this machine. Please can you help?

Thanks

Roger

Hi, Roger:

You have to manually install that driver by using the add printer wizard in W7.

Since there is no exe file, you have to extract the downloaded file into a driver folder.

The easiest way to do that is to use a free file utility like 7-zip.

The 2nd file at the top of the page is for 64 bit.

http://www.7-zip.org/

After you install 7-zip, right click on the printer driver file you saved.

Select 7-zip from the menu, and then have 7-Zip Extract to:  and let it extract the file into its folder name.

Then use the add printer wizard, select the HP laserjet 4L from the list of HP printers.

To install the driver file, click on Have Disk and browse to the driver file you unzipped, click on the prnhp001 setup information file and select the HP LaserJet 4L printer from the list, and the driver should install.

Here is a brief information video for how to manually install a printer in W7...

You would also add a local printer, and probably also use the  LPT1 port, select HP from the manufacturer list, and the laserjet 4L printer from the list of printers.

Thank you Paul,

Everything went OK till I clicked on prnhp001, then I got this message:The folder you specifed doesn't contain a compatible software driver for your device. If the folder contains a driver make sure it is designed to work with Windows for x64 - based software.

You're very welcome, Roger.

You downloaded the 2nd file on the list?  That is the x64 file.

If you are running W7 32 bit, then you have to download the 1st file on the list.

Here is a partial copy and paste of the setup information file which shows it is for 64 bit operating systems...
