@llibem, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your M234DW!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
I understand how frustrating it is when your HP LaserJet M234DW slows down after the first few pages and frequently enters Cool Down mode. Let’s go over some possible causes and solutions.
Why is This Happening?
Thermal Protection & Cooling Mechanism
- The HP LJ M234DW does not have a built-in cooling fan, but it monitors internal temperature to prevent overheating.
- If the printer detects excessive heat, it slows down and may enter Cool Down mode.
Print Job Size & Density
- If you're printing high-density (bold, graphics-heavy) pages, the printer reduces speed to prevent overheating.
- This happens more frequently with duplex (double-sided) printing.
Firmware Issues or Power Settings
- Outdated firmware might cause slowdowns.
- Energy-saving settings could be affecting print speeds.
Try these steps:
✅ 1. Update Firmware
- Go to HP Customer Support > Software & Drivers and update the printer firmware.
- Restart the printer after the update.
✅ 2. Change Printer Settings in Windows
- Open Control Panel > Devices & Printers.
- Right-click your HP LaserJet M234DW and select Printing Preferences.
- Adjust the following:
- Print Quality: Change to Draft or Normal.
- EconoMode: Enable this setting (reduces toner usage and heat buildup).
- Duplex Printing: If enabled, try disabling it and test single-sided printing.
✅ 3. Check for Paper Type Settings
- If the printer is set to thicker paper types (e.g., cardstock), it slows down printing.
- Change the setting to Plain Paper in Printing Preferences > Paper Type.
Let me know if this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!

i found latest firmware and applied, even though it said not for my specific model, but it worked and is much faster printing multiple pages, 20, 30, 50 very fast. though it does heatup quicker so pauses for a minute to cool down. i think there should be a fan to help dissipate heat faster.
thank you for your help.
