Hi @KathySullivan,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "missing or failed printhead" message on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8620 can be quite troublesome, but there are several steps you can take to try and resolve the issue. This problem usually indicates that the printer cannot detect the printhead, or the printhead is not working correctly due to various reasons such as connectivity issues, dirty contacts, or it’s simply reached the end of its life. Here’s a general approach to troubleshooting and hopefully fixing the issue:

  • Reset the Printer: Sometimes, simply resetting the printer can clear error messages. To reset your printer, turn it on and then disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall socket. Wait about 60 seconds, reconnect everything, and turn the printer back on.
  • Check the Printhead: Make sure the printhead is properly installed. Open the printer and carefully remove the printhead and then reseat it to ensure it’s properly connected. Handle the printhead and ink cartridges carefully to avoid any damage.
  • Clean the Printhead and Contacts: Dust, ink, or other debris on the printhead or its contacts can cause detection issues. You can gently clean the contacts with a lint-free cloth and distilled water. Be gentle and ensure everything is dry before reinstalling.
  • Update Printer Firmware: Outdated firmware can sometimes cause issues with hardware detection. Check the HP website for any firmware updates for your OfficeJet Pro 8620 and follow the instructions to update.
  • Replace the Printhead: If none of the above steps work, the printhead might be damaged or beyond repair. In this case, purchasing a replacement printhead might be necessary. Check compatibility and installation instructions carefully.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
