Hi @rnchapman,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can imagine how frustrating it must be to find your HP LaserJet MFP M225dw suddenly refusing to print after updating your Mac to macOS 15 (Tahoe 26.0.1), especially when it was working fine before. Let me help explain and guide you through what can be done.

Why this happens

The HP LaserJet MFP M225dw is a slightly older model, and official HP printer drivers were last released for macOS 15 (Sequoia).

Since macOS 26 (Tahoe) is newer, Apple’s update likely changed printer communication protocols, meaning the existing HP driver may no longer be compatible.

But don’t worry, there are ways to get printing again.

Step 1: Remove Old Printer Setup

  1. On your Mac, go to System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
  2. Select your HP LaserJet printer from the list.
  3. Click the “–” button to remove it.

Step 2: Reset Printing System (Optional but Recommended)

  1. Right-click (or Control-click) in the Printers list.
  2. Choose “Reset Printing System…” → Confirm.

This clears any old drivers or print queues that may be blocking the connection.

Step 3: Add the Printer Using AirPrint

  1. Click the “+” to add a new printer.
  2. When your printer appears, select it, but do not use the HP driver that appears automatically.
  3. In the “Use” drop-down, select “AirPrint” instead of “HP LaserJet MFP M225dw”.
  4. Click Add.

AirPrint is built into macOS and works seamlessly for most HP LaserJet printers, even when HP’s own driver isn’t updated yet.

Step 4: Try HP Easy Start

If AirPrint doesn’t work, download HP’s installer tool:
👉 HP Easy Start Mac | HP® Support
Search for your model (HP LaserJet MFP M225dw) and install any software offered.
This utility automatically detects the most compatible driver version available.

Step 5: Restart and Test

After installation, restart your Mac and printer, then try printing a test document.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
