when I try to print something off, a window will pop up on the screen saying that it may be a paper jam, or something to do with the ink cartridges. ive tried fixing it but nothings working. this is also a fairly new printer and I hadn't used it before now.

Let's follow the below steps that could resolve the issue.
Step 1: Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable
Make sure that the USB cable has not come loose between the printer and the computer.

Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the printer.

Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.

Wait five seconds.

Reconnect the USB cable to the printer and the computer. Apply some pressure to secure the connections.

Make sure that the USB cable is connected correctly.

Figure : Connect the larger end of the USB cable to the computer
If the error persists, continue to the next step.
Step 2: Reset the printer
Sometimes the printer is in an error state because it needs to be reset.
-
Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.

Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
-
Wait at least 60 seconds.

Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
NOTE:
HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.

Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
-
Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
-
Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
If the error persists, continue to the next step.
Step 3: Plug the printer directly into an electrical outlet

Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

Unplug the power cord from any power strips or surge suppressors.
-
Plug the power cord directly into an electrical outlet.
-
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

Turn on the printer.
