Hi @evanbaer,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your panel settings are locked on your HP printer 6958, it can be frustrating, but there are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue. Here are some troubleshooting steps to help you unlock the panel settings.

  • Power cycle the printer: Turn off your printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 30 seconds, and then plug it back in. Power it on again and check if the panel settings are still locked.
  • Check for physical switches: Some printers have physical switches or buttons that can lock or unlock certain settings. Look for any switches or buttons labeled "Lock" or "Unlock" on the printer's control panel, and make sure they are in the correct position.
  • Check the control panel display: If there's an error message or a notification on the printer's display, follow the on-screen instructions to see if it helps resolve the issue. Sometimes, specific messages can provide clues about why the settings are locked.
  • Reset the printer to factory defaults: Resetting the printer to its factory default settings can sometimes unlock the panel settings. However, keep in mind that this will also reset other customized settings on the printer. To perform a factory reset, refer to your printer's user manual or the HP support website for specific instructions.
  • Update firmware: Outdated firmware can cause various issues, including locking settings. Check the HP support website for any available firmware updates for your printer model, and follow the instructions to update the firmware.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
