HP Envy 5540
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Up until a few days ago, my HP Envy 5540 printed on both sides automatically. It has stopped doing that. It must be done manually. I have tried removing the printer and adding it back. I have uninstalled the software and reinstalled. I have run the update and it states that it is updated. I am very frustrated. I'm not a computer person so I don't know what else to try nor what I may have done to cause this problem.

@fmcapps, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Check the software settings. Refer to this document.

Also, refer to page 25 of the user manual.

Check if Duplexer is installed on the software.

Go to Devices and printers > Select your printer > Printer properties > Device settings > Automatic Duplexing Unit > Installed.

To use the duplexer as default right click on the printer and select Printing Preferences. Click the Layout tab, then select either Long edge or Short edge.

If this does not help, a Clean installation of HP Full-featured drivers may help.

  1.  In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
  2.  Select your HP Printer
  3.  Select Uninstall
  4.  In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
  5.  In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’
  6.  Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.
  7.  Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
  8.  Click on the “Drivers” tab
  9.  Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
  10.  Select Ok
  11.  Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
  12.  Close Devices and Printers, restart the computer.

Click here to download the HP Full-featured driver.

Once downloaded, make sure to run the file to start the installation and follow the on-screen instructions.

Try to Print.

Let me know how this goes.

I will give it a try. And no. When I check in the settings, duplex printing is not installed and it is grayed out so I can't click on it. I will use your instructions. Hopefully tonight but it may be tomorrow. I will get back to you. Thank you so much for trying to help me. I have had this printer for years and I have never had any problem.

It didn't work. I tried it twice. But thank you!

@fmcapps

That's Unfortunate. Have you logged in as Administrator on your PC? If you are not an admin, the options may be greyed out and not let you change it.

Update the printer firmware

Click here to download and install the latest firmware from your computer.

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Also, check for Windows update

Select the Start button, and then go to Settings > Update & Security Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Rin HP Print and Scan Doctor

Click here to download the diagnostic tool.

If this does not help, Install a generic driver.

Go to Devices and Printer, right-click on the Envy 5540, Printer Properties, Advanced, Driver, New Driver, Next, select HP (not Hewlett-Packard) as the manufacturer and select the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Class driver, Next, Finish. Click back on the Envy 5540 Properties window, General and in the top area change the name back to Envy 5540, OK.

Try to print.

Let me know how this goes.
