- need to download a canon driver on my HP laptop

I want to download a canon mx720 series driver for my new hp laptop but it wont recognise the printer either wirelessly or with USB - the Good Guys cant offer any assistance so I am trying to get hold of tech support at HP but that seems worse than trying to speak to someone on the moon. Can anyone help with this? Canon seem to think the laptop is in SAFE mode but the tech at Good Guys said it isnt in that mode. The laptop just wont recognise the canon printer at all.

Whether you can download software has nothing to do with the brand of computer - just a pile of hardware, after all.
Your security software might be preventing the download or even the installation - check and add an exception if that is the case.
Windows is the "life blood" of the computer and controls interaction with the physical world.
The Operating System controls whether you have permission for certain activities.
For example,
- Check the UAC level
- Make sure you are installing software using an account that includes administrative privilege. "Regular" users do not have the security clearance to install software - you have to have "Admin" status.
Ask Microsoft what is going on with Microsoft Windows. This is especially true when you receive conflicting information.
Ask the Community: Microsoft Community
The installation of the printer software and whether the printer is recognized is in the control of your network - that is, how that network is configured and the permissions you have assigned it.
Next, the driver version has to be supported in your current version of your Operating System. For example, a driver that was released six years ago might - or might Not - continue to work in the latest versions of Windows 10.
If the printer is not recognized on the Network,
- Make sure the router that controls the network recognizes the printer,
- The printer and the computer are on the same subnet / network,
- VPN is switched OFF.

If the computer was damaged before purchase or if the system contains defective hardware,
Then yes, you can submit a case for Warranty repair.
Personal Opinion
HP Support will likely not help you install your Canon Printer into Windows on your home network.

- If necessary, Select your Country on the main website page or at the bottom (click Flag)
- Scroll down > To the right of Check multiple warranties, Click Continue
- Enter the Serial Number and Country for one or more devices / systems to be checked
- Check the box to verify you are "Not a robot"
