HP DeskJet GT 5820 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My printer does not have an inbuilt duplex printing option.

I know that.

But the software is supposed to have an option to print all odd/even pages, then flipping and inserting the stack to get the remaining pages printed.

This way one could print on 2 sides.

But this was 5-6 years ago.

Now jump to today, I'm not able to find this option, and selecting print on 2 sides of the page from hp smart app, ends up printing all pages together, just odd ones straight and even ones upside down. there is no flipping system. Earlier long ago it used to print only odd/even, then a prompt would come saying that "flip your sheets once finished printing, press continue." Now there is nothing of that sort.

So I'm not able to print on 2 sides unless I manually refeed each sheet after one side has finished printing, and that has its own issues of printing saying out of paper.

Please help.

Turns out that the hp smart app is not good for printing on both sides.

1. I opened the pdf document in my browser

2. I pressed print, and then went to print with system dialog. or ctrl+shift+print

3. There was that 5-6 year old dialog box with now super old ui popping up.

4. Changed setting there to print on both sides

5. it printed on both sides using the odd/even now flip your stack method.

so it better not to use the hp smart app for documents.

ps: in this case there was no problem with my drivers, the driver in use had the same name as my printer.

Check what driver you have installed.  Often HP drivers get replaced by Microsoft supplied drivers which have very limited feature sets and often do not offer duplex of any sort.  You can check the driver installed by doing the following on your computer:  go to control panel>devices and printers and then right click on the icon for your printer and select printer properties from the dropdown menu. Click on the advanced tap and see the driver that is installed. There may also be a tab labelled "about" which will give you more details about the driver. Lack of the about tab is an indicator that you likely have a Microsoft driver and not an HP driver. If you do not have an HP driver installed, delete the printer and download the current driver from support.hp.com and reinstall the printer.
