I keep following online instructions on how to do a factory reset but fact is afterwards the printer is still 'updated' and no new updates have been found. Therefore I need to do a (more) serious reset. Really starting from scratch and cannot find out how to do it.

Reason for this is somehow at setup it assumed I had enrolled in some online cartridge supply programme which I have not and never used and therefore it prevented me from changing the automatic update switch.
Thanks for any help

You will have to uninstall the old HP driver from your printer, then clean the registry (Imperative if you want a new machine! ) We will start by uninstalling, then cleaning the registry, it's long, but very effective

I haven't written to turn on the printer yet, so it's off.

Uninstall the old driver in Control Panel, in "Programs and Features", then remove

all occurrences in "Program" and "X86 Program", in Control Panel, right click on your old printer (If it is still there, chances are that it is no longer there) "Remove", if it is present.

Restart the PC.

Passons au nettoyage de la base de registre :

My Tutorial ( 2 ).

We will have to get our hands dirty : Open the registry :

Tap on the keys : "Windows + R", type "regedit" in the empty space, do "enter on keyboard " (or "OK").

You are there in the registry, OK.

In the registry, at the top, click on "Edit", "Search",

Type the name of your printer (for example : HP Officejet 5740), tap Next.

In the right column, found, right-click, delete the rows that contain

The name of your printer. Once deleted, press the F3 key (Next),

Right column (again), delete the rows that contain your printer name.

Do this until the registry outputs a "no longer contains files of this name" message.

It's long, but very effective. Close the registry and restart the computer.

At the end of the reboot, you can install the new full HP driver, with the help of my tutorial   (1).

And you will have this menu, see photo below, when you press the printer shortcut, on the Windows desktop :
