Many times a try to print but even though the preview is clear the printer over prints part of the page making the output illegible. Is this a win 10 problem or HP and what do I do to cure it?

Welcome to HP support community.

Did you make a copy and check if that prints fine?

If that does not copy fine, follow the below steps:

Clean the printhead

  1. Load plain white paper into the tray.

  2. On the printer control panel, touch the Right Arrow () to display additional options.

  3. Touch Setup (), and then touch Tools.

  4. Touch Clean Printhead. There are three cleaning stages. A test page (different from the Print Quality Diagnostics page) prints between each cleaning stage. Do not use this test page for analysis. Touch No when prompted to continue the next level of cleaning.

  5. Print another Print Quality Diagnostics Report to determine if the issue is resolved.

  6. Examine Test Pattern 2 on the Print Quality Diagnostics Report.

Update the printer firmware

  1. From the home screen on the printer control panel, touch the ePrint icon ().

  2. Wait for the printer to connect to the ePrint server. The ePrint status displays.

  3. Touch Settings on the bottom left corner of the screen.

  4. Touch Printer Update, and then touch Check for Update Now.

It is nothing to do with paper, latest software, clean heads etc that you mention.

The preview shows a given page but the copy has, for instance, the top 4 0r 5 lines over printed on the lower down text thus making it almost illegible.

Could you share the picture of the printed page for better understanding?

The photo is a copy and clearly shows the overprinting. I use either controp P or the print icon and both give the same result. I wonder if it is a windows problem since the print command can bring up at least 4 different screens for selecting the printer with different options such as print all or selection or current page and not all versions give all options.

This seems to be a hardware issue.

I request you to talk to HP support.

They might have multiple options to help you with this.

  1. Click on this link - https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp?openCLC=true
  2. Select the country.
  3. Enter the serial of your device.
  4. Select the country from the drop-down.
  5. Click on "Show Options".
  6. Fill the web-form. A case number and phone number will now populate for you.
