Hi @duckme,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how frustrating this feelsWhen you press Copy, hear the soft whir of the scanner, watch the bar glide under the glass… and then everything just freezes on “Scanning…”, it feels like the printer is holding its breath and refusing to finish the job.

You're not doing anything wrong; this is a known HP behavior, and we can fix it step by step.

Let’s walk through the recommended solutions that address this issue.

1. Clean the Scanner Glass (Top Fix for “Hangs During Copy”)

Dust or smudges on the glass can stop the printer mid‑scan.
HP support specifically calls this out as a cause for scanning/alignment hangs.

Do this:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Open the scanner lid.
  3. Use a lint‑free microfiber cloth.
  4. Wipe:
    • The main glass
    • The white backing under the lid
(This is important, HP confirms the backing can cause scan stalls.)

2. Restart / Power Reset the Printer

A simple restart clears stuck scan operations.
Recommended by HP agents for scan‑hang issues.

Steps:

  1. Turn the printer off.
  2. Unplug the power cable.
  3. Wait 30 seconds.
  4. Plug the power back in.
  5. Try copying again.

3. Check if the Page Is Placed Correctly

Incorrect alignment of page placement causes the printer to scan but freeze afterwards.

Correct placement:

  • Printed side down
  • Aligned to the small arrows or marked corners
  • Not in ADF (flatbed only for alignment scans)

Even for normal copy operations, exact positioning matters.

4. Reprint the Alignment Page (If Alignment Is What Freezes)

Alignment pages that are smudged or not printed cleanly can cause scanning to hang.

Steps:

Go to: Settings → Printer Maintenance → Align Printhead
Print a fresh alignment page, clean the glass again, and retry.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
