After installing the drivers and attempting to print photos, I have realized there isn't an option to select photo paper in the dialog anymore. Not sure what to do. I have removed/uninstalled a couple times and reinstalled. Please advise. Thanks, Patrick.

Welcome to the HP English Community --

Some questions to help narrow down the source of the issue --

Answer what you will and we will work with what you tell us...

What is the printer software / drivers or application you have installed / uninstalled / reinstalled?

For example,

Are you reinstalling the full driver printer software or HP Smart?

Have you tried Restarting the Printer?

What are displayed in your printer's Tray and Paper settings in EWS?

and...

Which software / application are you using ?

What paper size is the photo paper you have loaded and want to use?

What is the print surface on that Photo Paper?  Glossy?

Is the Photo paper HP or another high-quality paper brand?

Is the paper weight supported in the printer?

Is this paper you have used before?

Have you tried a different app / software program?

Hey, thanks for the help. First off, I have had this printer working fine for the longest time. It was quite straight forward; you try to print from any application using the printer dialog and you select the type of paper that you loaded. I have used HP photo paper; mainly the 20lb stuff.

Just recently, I did a computer upgrade and so I needed to reinstall the printer. After the install, I have lost the ability to select the hp photo paper "glossy" type in the print preferences dialog. It isn't there. And, it will allow me to select color, but it will only print black and white.

I have tried printing through chrome and windows photos. As I have done in the past.

I have reinstalled the hp smart and uninstalled several times all hp software under the remove programs section; along with several reboots of the printer and the computer.

The photo paper option is there on the EWS.

I am stumped. The only thing I can think is that the HP driver install is screwed up?

Please advise.

Thanks Patrick.

@patrick260

You are welcome.

So -- I don't know.

I only really have the one type of "HP Photo" paper listed in my HP Smart App --

There are certainly other paper sizes / types available --

Caveat

Not all paper sizes and types are compatible with one another.

For example,

Brochure paper comes in both glossy and matte -- in standard size (Letter / A4)

There is not (at this writing) an HP Brochure paper that is paper size 4x6 inches

You cannot (should not) select Paper size 4x6 inches and Brochure paper type.

What if?

If you've not done so,

Try a Power / Restart on the printer

Essentially,

  • Unplug the printer (while switched ON)
  • Leave unplugged for as long as you can stand it (a couple of minutes)
  • Plug the printer into a standard wall outlet and boot (start) the printer

What else / next?

If your paper types are missing as compared to what was listed in the past,

If you have not done so, you could try a App Reset on HP Smart .

The app Reset removes the app's data in your account -- if something is corrupted in the "app data", the Reset can fix it.

The HP Smart App Reset also wipes out any saved HP Smart Shortcuts and the like, so decide whether it is worth the effort to try the Reset, then act.

Will the App Reset work?  Might -- Success depends on the source of the problem.

The App Reset might end up being a lot of hassle for little or no return...

NOTES

  • If you skip one or more steps and nothing works, consider going back and adding any missed checkpoints.
  • Ignore anything not relevant, unwanted, disliked.

Start

Reminder

It is important that every device where HP Smart is installed is using the latest version of the HP Smart app for that device type.

Check / Update >> Every device (computer(s) and mobile) where HP Smart is installed should be running the latest version of the HP Smart application available for that device platform (Operating System / Version).

AND

The printer and device (computer, tablet, phone) where HP Smart is running should be on the same network.

That might be enough…

Stop if everything is now working.

No Joy?

Restart Everything, including the router that controls your network

That might be enough (at least short term) -- check...

Stop if everything is now working.

Next,

Windows

Check / Run Windows Updates > Install any pending updates

Next,

If not previously completed,

Restart everything, including the router that controls your network.

Can’t stand it?  Consider:  Restart computer(s) and printer.

Next,

Open and Check HP Smart

Stop if everything is now working.

If the HP Smart opens but does not work or hangs partly open:

Close the HP Smart App

If you cannot close HP Smart: Restart the computer and log in

Do not start the HP Smart yet.

No Joy?

Windows - Reset HP Smart Application

Next,

Reset the HP Smart application - This action removes the app data.

How to Reset the App

Windows 10 -

Settings > Apps > Apps and Features

OR

Windows 11 -

Settings > Apps > Installed Apps

Next,

Search / Find HP Smart in the apps list

Open Advanced options > Reset the app

Restart the computer and log in

Open HP Smart > Sign in > Add Printer(s)

What if?

If the app Reset does not work by itself,

Next,

Uninstall the HP Smart App from Settings > Apps > Installed Apps or Apps and Features

Restart the computer and log in

“Get” a new copy of the HP Smart application from the Microsoft Store

Open HP Smart > Sign in > Add Printer(s)

What else?

Windows...

The odd thing (to me) is that the full driver printer software is not related to HP Smart (at least not in this way).

Losing control of Paper Types (that are compatible with the paper size) might mean something is corrupted deeper in Windows.

A clean install of Windows is ideal (in my opinion) -- you have to reload your programs but there is not any "residual" software bits stuck in the crevices - there is no "old Windows" lurking about.

If you do an in-place Upgrade that changed the version of Windows, then you end up with an in-bred combination of the old and the new.  I dislike in-place "upgrades" for this reason.  Sticky things and prone to weirdness, in my opinion.

Below is an older example of a procedure that might still be current enough to give you ideas where to look for lurking pieces of left over software from previous installation attempts.

This might not be the solution you need, but it's harmless if a bit time consuming.

Check and Remove "stuck bits" of Printer Software (prep to reinstall full driver printer software)
