Please provide the Product ID or Model name or the printer for better assistance. I recommend you configure the print to the modem using the modems password or the printer PIN.
Pins and Passwords explained ===(sorry if it is too long)====
Your modem has an access password and a WiFi password. they will be the same unless you changed the WiFi password. It is also possible to change the SSID of the modem. This is recommended when there are multiple bands so a device can select a better band such as 5ghz instead of the crowded 2.4 band.
Your printer has a PIN used for WPS network connection. Sometimes there is a default pin like 12345678 and some printers allow the PIN to be changed. The printer can also have a password for use with WI-Fi direct .
Get a printer report. The PINs and Passwords should show up. Here is the important stuff from a typical report. The password shown in WiFi can be the printers PIN or the modem's password depending on how you connected to the modem.
LAN | STATUS | IP address | SSID | Password |
WiFi | enabled | 192.168.1.15 | ATT-ARRIS | GuessAgain |
WiFi-direct | enabled | 192.168.123.1 | DIRECT-WHATEVER | BadGuess |
Wired | disabled | |||
USB | disabled |
If you connect the printer to the modem then any Desktop, Laptop, iPhone or Android device on the same subnet can immediately access the printer just by looking for it and will not need any passwords. A quick test is to simply click or enter http://192.168.1.15 into Safari, Edge or Chrome on each device. You will see something like this
If you configure the printer for WiFi direct each PC or smartphone will need to be paired with the printer using HP Smart. If your desktop does not have WFi it is unlikely to connect. This network mode is useful if your apartment or flat charges for each device connected to the modem. WiFi direct is needed if the modem does not have WPS or you do not have physical access to the modem.
