Hi @jrh869,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP printer is showing a “Missing or Failed Printhead” error. Here are the steps to troubleshoot and potentially fix the issue:
Step-by-Step Fix for Missing or Failed Printhead Error
1. Reset the Printer
This can clear temporary errors.
- Turn off the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (not a surge protector).
- Turn the printer back on.
2. Check for a Removable Printhead
- Open the cartridge access door.
- Wait for the carriage to stop moving.
- If your printer has a latch on the carriage, the printhead is removable.
- If no latch is present, the printhead is not user-replaceable and may require service.
- If no latch is present, the printhead is not user-replaceable and may require service.
3. Clean the Printhead Contacts
If the printhead is removable:
- Remove all ink cartridges.
- Lift the latch and gently remove the printhead.
- Use a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water to clean the electrical contacts on the printhead and inside the carriage.
- Let it dry for 10 minutes.
- Reinstall the printhead and cartridges, then close the latch.
4. Reseat the Printhead
- Remove and reinsert the printhead firmly.
- Make sure the latch is fully closed.
5. Update Firmware
- Go to Official HP® Support.
- Enter your printer model and install any available firmware updates.
I hope this helps.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
