Lost power and now printer won't start up.  It has power, but just keeps clicking (like when it is grabbing a new sheet of paper).  It appears the noise is coming from behind the black ink cartridge.  The status window just has an hour glass.  The green light next to the power button flashes.  The power button does not turn the machine off, unless I hold it down for several seconds and then only powers off a minute or so after I release the power button. Usually I unplug the printer to get it to stop (if I don't unplug it, the clicking stops after a few minutes, but the status window continues to show the hour glass symbol).  If I raise the top (where the ink cartridges are) the machine drops the cartridges for changing.  The computer also gives the message that the top is open or that a cartridge is missing.

This has happened before when I have lost power.  It only happens on start-up from power off, therefore I always leave it on.  In past power interruptions, I have been able to get it working again by trying one or more of the following:

Leaving it unplugged for an hour, then trying again

     Changing the black print cartridge

Vacuuming out the machine, front & back and with the top raised

Blow out the front and back with a hair dryer set on cool

None of my previous "fixes" are working this time.

Any ideas?  It is several years out of warranty, but has been a really good printer/scanner.  I don't use the fax function.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Try connecting the Printer to a different wall outlet directly.

Let's also try a firmware update: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_1776648-1643972-16

Let me know if this helps.

If the information I've provided was helpful, give us some reinforcement by clicking the Accepted Solution and Kudos buttons, that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Thanks!

Have a great day!
