On initial setup - I loaded the paper in the tray and pushed the tray in.  I did not have the top and bottom aligned correctly.  I pulled the tray back out and reinstalled it correctly.  During this process the printer was doing something.  That something, I believe, was trying to print the alignment page with no paper.  This is an issue in itself as a printer should not print if the paper tray is empty or not in. 

  I waited a good 5 minutes for the alignment page to print. It did not.  I could not find anything in the setup guide on how to proceed.  
 Any suggestions?  Btw printer is not connected to my phone or wi-fi yet,

Maybe you need as a first step to connect your printer with Wifi.
