Hi @SuperTourer,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When your HP OfficeJet Pro 6970 printer suddenly asks for setup cartridges that you don't have, it typically means it's expecting cartridges that were either originally included with the printer or are recognized by the printer as setup cartridges. Here are a few steps you can try to bypass or resolve this issue.

Restart the Printer: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary issues. Turn off your printer, wait for about 30 seconds, and then turn it back on.

Check Cartridge Compatibility: Ensure that the cartridges you are using are compatible with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6970 printer. Using non-compatible or third-party cartridges can sometimes cause such errors.

Reset the Printer: You can try resetting your printer to its factory defaults. This might help reset any erroneous settings causing the setup cartridge message. To reset.

  • Turn on the printer.
  • Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn the printer on again.

If you recently installed new cartridges and this issue started immediately afterward, double-check that these cartridges are correctly seated and are genuine HP cartridges compatible with your printer model.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
