Hi @desertflower1,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
When highlighted text appears as a black box when printed, it's typically a result of issues with printer settings, driver problems, or conflicts between the document formatting and the printer's capabilities. Here are several steps you can take to resolve this issue:
Check Printer Preferences:
- Before sending the print job, check the printer preferences. Make sure that all settings are correct for the type of document you're printing. Sometimes, adjusting the quality settings or choosing a different paper type setting can resolve the issue.
Update Printer Drivers:
- Outdated or corrupted printer drivers can cause printing errors. Visit the HP website to download and install the latest drivers for your printer model.
Print as Image:
- If you are printing a PDF document, you can try printing the document as an image. In Adobe Reader, you can do this by clicking Print > Advanced > check Print as Image. This can sometimes bypass issues related to document rendering.
Document Formatting:
- Check the document itself. If the highlighted text is showing as a black box, there might be an issue with how the text highlighting is formatted. Try changing the highlight color or removing and reapplying the highlight.
- If possible, try printing the document from a different application. For instance, if the issue occurs in Microsoft Word, try opening and printing the document from Google Docs or another word processor.
Print Settings in Document:
- Some applications have specific print settings that can affect output. In Microsoft Word, for instance, check under File > Options > Display and ensure that all printing options are configured correctly.
Test Printer:
- Print a test page from the printer settings to ensure the printer is functioning correctly. Also, try printing another document with highlighted text to see if the issue is document-specific or a general problem with the printer.
Adjust Color Settings:
- Sometimes, printers handle colors in unique ways. Adjusting the color settings on your printer through its software interface might help. Try setting it to print in grayscale to see if that affects how highlights are printed.
Reinstall Printer:
- If none of the above solutions work, try completely removing the printer from your system and reinstalling it. This can help reset any settings that might have been incorrectly configured.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
