@Phil0078, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

For the HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Printer, setup cartridges are specifically required when setting up the printer for the first time. These cartridges are included in the box and need to be installed to initialize the printer successfully.

The error message indicating that the cartridges are not compatible with a continuous ink system may occur if non-genuine HP cartridges or a third-party continuous ink system is being used. HP printers, including the OfficeJet Pro 8720, are designed to work with genuine HP ink cartridges and do not support third-party continuous ink systems.

Steps to Resolve Compatibility Issues:

Use Genuine HP Setup Cartridges: Make sure that you are using the genuine HP setup cartridges that came with the printer. These are required for the initial setup.

Update Firmware: If you encounter errors with original HP cartridges, update your printer’s firmware to the latest version. You can find instructions on updating firmware on the HP Firmware Update Page.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
