After an apparent update...my printer is printing in a completely unorthodox way than ever before. I've owned this model for several years and have NEVER had issues like this. It refuses to print in color, unless I create the Word document into a PDF. It almost seems as though there are compatibility/configuration issues between Word and my printer all of a sudden.

Hi @WHumber,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds frustrating to experience printing issues with your Color LaserJet Pro M254dw after an update. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:
Check Printer Settings:
- Make sure that the printer settings on your computer are configured correctly to allow color printing. Open the document you want to print, go to the print dialog, and ensure that color printing is selected.
Update Printer Drivers:
- Sometimes, driver updates can resolve compatibility issues. Visit the HP support website (support.hp.com), enter your printer model (Color LaserJet Pro M254dw), and download the latest drivers and software available for your operating system.
Verify Printer Preferences:
- Check the printer preferences or settings on your computer. Ensure that color printing is enabled and set as the default option. Sometimes settings can revert to defaults after updates.
Check Document Format and Software Compatibility:
- Since you mentioned that printing in color works when you convert the Word document to PDF, there might be an issue with how Word interacts with the printer after the update. Try printing from different applications or file formats to see if the issue persists.
Reset Printer Settings:
- Resetting the printer settings to default can sometimes resolve configuration issues. You can usually do this through the printer's menu or settings on the printer's control panel.
Check for Firmware Updates:
- Firmware updates for the printer can also address compatibility issues. Check if there are any firmware updates available for your Color LaserJet Pro M254dw and install them according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Test with Another Device:
- To isolate whether the issue is with your computer or the printer, try printing a color document from another device, such as a different computer or a mobile device.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
