The printer "thinks" I did not replace the ink cartridges that came in the print head replacement kit, but I did. How do I get the printer to proceed?

Printer model? Impossible to provide an answer without that.

Yeah, I should have included that.  Designjet t230.

I should also include the message I get at startup--"new, unused cartridges must be used for startup"

After replacing the cartridges with the ones included with  the kit, the printer started a printhead alignment. Why? i don't know. It told me to insert a sheet, and then printed a test sheet and said the printhead needed replacing. Of course, I already knew that. I replaced the printedhead, and got that message on startup.
