macOS 10.15 Catalina

Hi!

We have recently updated our iMac to Catalina 10.15, and noticed that the printer wont cooperate with us. So i tried to reinstall the printer with HP printer driver and HP smart app -  but still no help. When i install the HP driver on my older macbook pro version 10.11 El Capitan it works fine. Also AirPrint works fine. But when i try to add the printer on the iMac in the settings "printer and scanner" under "system settings", it just wont apply the changes I do. The printer is there on the list, but it wont connect. I have even tried to use the printer with Ethernet cable and USB from printer to iMac, but either does that work. I have also tried to reinstall the printer software back to standard settings, but still, same problem. Does anyone have any tips or tricks? Is HP even familiar with this issue? Again, AirPrint works fine, but we want to have the printer installed on the iMac with the following HP Printer Driver so we can print from the iMac and not only wireless devices. Please let us know if anyone out there has any suggestions on how they solved it..

Hi @Bajwa32

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.

What happens when you try printing?

This printer is AirPrint compatible. Installing the printer using AirPrint driver on the iMac is recommended. If you wish to install the printer using HP driver, Make sure you have used the driver available on the HP Support site. Click here.

Also, make sure both the devices are updated

Update the printer firmware

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Also, check for any software updates on MAC

Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hi!

thanks for a quick answer!

Even the AirPrint on iMac is not working. There is this message popping up every time “a problem occurred while connecting to the device” - “cannot communicate with the printer at the moment”

I have also checked the homepage for the printer EWS, and AirPrint is turned on.
btw is it not possible to send any screen shots here? I took a few so you could see.

and yes I have updated the firmware.

I am reading a lot of issues with printer drivers on newer iOS versions.. I guess I am not the only one that is struggling?

You can attach screenshots in your next post by clicking on the paperclip icon available in the menu bar above the area where you type your post.

If you are able to access the EWS page of the printer from your iMac, there is a connection between these devices. Let us verify a few things:

  • Make sure the printer and the MAC are connected to the same wireless network.
  • This printer supports only 2.4GHz network. So, the iMac should be on the 2.4GHz network.
  • If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both the networks.
  • The wireless status menu on your Mac should also give us quite a lot of information that would help us identify the issue. You can press and hold the option key on your keyboard and click the WiFi icon to get detailed information.

Perform a PING test

  1. Obtain the IP address of the printer by clicking on the Wireless icon on the printer
  2. On the MAC Go to Spotlight > search for Network utility > select Ping tab > enter the IP address of the printer in the box
  3. Check the second box that says Send only > 10 pings
  4. Click on ping > Check the results at the end if any packets are lost
  5. Note: There should be 0% packet loss, share the results in your next post.

Keep me posted.

I can also confirm that the iMac and printer is on the same network.

But when you mentioned the dual-band channels, I am not quite sure how to change it on this router. This router is pretty much new as we recently got new fiber network cables in the neigbourhood.

@Bajwa32, thank you for the response. According the PING results, there is a slight communication loss between the devices.

You may contact your Internet service provider to rename the network names if they are the same.

This applies only if both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID.

  • The wireless status menu on your Mac should also give us quite a lot of information that would help us identify the issue. You can press and hold the option key on your keyboard and click the WiFi icon to get detailed information.
  • You can press and hold option-click the WiFi icon and then use shift-command-5 to take the screenshot and share it in your next post. Press the space bar when the icon turns into a camera.
  • Send us the screenshot in your next post.

Keep me posted for further assistance.
