HP OfficeJet 4650 All-in-One Printer

I have done several things to fix this problem and I am still getting this message. How do I fix it? It happened after I changed out an ink cartridge.

Hi @rkagebein

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "Service Station Stalled" error typically indicates a problem with the ink system or the internal components of the printer, such as the service station where the printer parks the printhead and performs cleaning and maintenance. This issue often occurs after an ink cartridge replacement, but there are steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.

Steps to Fix "Service Station Stalled" Error

1. Restart the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on to see if the error persists.

2. Check for Blockages

  • Open the printer cover to check for any obstructions or debris around the service station (the area where the printhead parks when idle).
  • Sometimes, leftover ink or small pieces of paper can block the movement of the printhead. Use a flashlight to carefully inspect this area.
  • Gently move the printhead (if possible) to see if it moves freely. If it feels stuck, do not force it, but try to clear any visible obstructions.

3. Remove and Reinsert Ink Cartridges

  • Turn off the printer and open the ink cartridge compartment.
  • Remove the ink cartridges and inspect them for any signs of damage or dried ink.
  • Clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer using a soft, lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water.
  • Reinsert the cartridges and make sure they are securely seated.

4. Perform a Manual Cleaning

  • If there’s ink buildup in the service station, you may need to clean it manually.
  • Power off the printer and unplug it.
  • Use a clean, damp cloth to wipe away any excess ink in the service station area and around the printhead.
  • Avoid using too much water or pressing too hard on delicate components.

5. Reset the Printer

  • Perform a hard reset to clear any errors:
    • Disconnect the printer from the power source while it is turned on.
    • Wait for about 2 minutes.
    • Plug the printer back in and turn it on. This may reset the internal components and clear the stalled message.

6. Run a Printer Diagnostic (HP Smart or Built-In Diagnostics)

  • If you're using an HP printer with the HP Smart app, run the diagnostic tool to check for issues with the ink system or service station.
  • Alternatively, most HP printers have built-in diagnostic tests accessible via the printer's control panel. Navigate to the Tools or Settings menu and run the self-diagnosis or maintenance options.

7. Firmware Update

  • Ensure your printer has the latest firmware. Sometimes, outdated firmware can cause errors.
  • Visit the HP Support website, enter your printer model, and download any available firmware updates.

8. Perform a Partial or Full Reset (Advanced)

  • In some cases, a deeper reset of the printer can help.
    • Partial Reset: This restores factory settings while keeping some user settings.
    • Full Reset: This returns the printer to factory conditions, erasing all settings.
  • You may need to contact HP support for guidance on performing these types of resets as they require specific key combinations on your printer's control panel.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
