@JanHB,

Enfin/Hello -it is very common for HP Smart to "lose" the scanning connection after a power outage, even if printing still works. This usually happens because the scanner driver or the network handshake between the app and the printer is stuck in an error state.

Here is a step-by-step guide to get your scanner back online:

1. Perform a Full Power Reset:

Sometimes a simple restart isn't enough to clear the error state in the printer's memory after a surge.

  • Turn off the printer using the power button.
  • Unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid power strips or surge protectors for this reset) and turn it back on.

2. Use the "Diagnose & Fix" Tool:

HP Smart has a built-in repair tool that can often restart the scanning service without you having to reinstall everything.

  • Open the HP Smart app.
  • Windows: Click the wrench icon (bottom-left) or go to Printer Settings > Diagnose & Fix.
  • macOS: Tap the Printers menu in the top bar and select Diagnose & Fix.
  • Follow the prompts and let it attempt to reconnect the scanner.

3. Remove and Re-add the Printer:

If the app still shows "online" but refuses to scan, the specific "scan profile" might be corrupted.

  • In the HP Smart app, right-click (or long-press) your printer icon and select Remove Printer.
  • Close and reopen the app.
  • Select Add Printer and follow the instructions to set it up again.

4. Check Windows Services (if using a PC):

If the above steps don't work, a specific Windows service might have failed to restart after the power cut.

  • Press Windows Key + R, type: services.msc, and press Enter.
  • Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
  • Right-click it and select Restart.

If you still can't scan, try checking the HP Support Page for a Firmware Update, as a power outage can sometimes disrupt older firmware versions.

Optional:  personally, in order to avoid issues like the one you are dealing with, I have plugged in all my various electronic devices in UPS's (Uninterruptable Power Supplies).  This appears to work well, including protecting my electronic equipment.
