scan multiple images and save each as separate file

I want to scan multiple images on OfficeJet 6978 and separate and save them as individual files

We understand what you're trying to accomplish. The HP Officejet 6978 can scan multiple photos or documents placed on the scanner glass and save each one as a separate file, provided you're using the HP scanning software that supports the multi-item feature.
 

By default, many scanning applications treat everything on the scanner glass as a single image. Enabling the multi-item scan option allows the software to detect the boundaries between separate items and save them individually.
 

1. Arrange the Items Correctly

1. Place up to three photos or documents on the scanner glass.
2. Leave a small gap between each item.
3. Avoid overlapping the items or placing them too close together.

2. Enable the Multi-Item Scan Feature

1. Open the HP Smart app or HP Scan software on your computer.
2. Select Scan.
3. Choose Scanner Glass as the scan source.
4. Open the advanced scan settings and enable multi-item (if available).
5. Click Scan.

3. Review the Scan Preview

After scanning:

1. Verify that each photo or document appears in its own selection box.
2. Adjust the crop boundaries if necessary.
3. Confirm that each item is correctly identified before saving.

4. Save Each Image Individually

When saving:

• Choose JPEG or another individual image format instead of a multi-page PDF.
• Save the files using your preferred names and location.

With multi-item enabled, the HP scanning software should automatically detect each photo or document placed on the scanner glass and save each one as a separate file, reducing the need to scan each item individually.
 

If you don't see the multi-item option, please let us know:

• Are you using HP App or the older HP Scan software?
• Are you using Windows or macOS?
• Are you scanning photos, documents, or a combination of both?

I have the HP smart Ap and scan from that. I do not see the multiple image scan function as you have identified in your message. So do I have the right APP for doing this with my OfficeJet 6978?

Thank you so much for your response @MtMan2 and letting us know that the function is not visible on your end. 

The HP Smart app is the correct application for basic scanning with your HP Officejet 6978. 

We request that you please uninstall the HP Smart app and install the HP app as it is the upgraded version of the HP Smart app from the Microsoft Store and follow the steps provided below and check if the function is available for the printer and give us the update.

Scan multiple items at once

• The advanced scanning features in the HP app include a multi-item preset that scans up to three items at a time and automatically separates them into separate files.
• Select a scan tile.
• Windows, macOS: Click Scan, and then select Scanner Glass from the Source menu.
• Android, iOS: Tap Scan, Printer Scan, or Camera Scan.
• Prepare the item to be scanned.
• Printer scan: Place up to three items on the scanner glass.
• Camera scan: Place up to three items on a flat, well-lit surface so that the device camera can take a clear capture.
• Select Multi-Item from the Advance Presets menu or from the scan-type carousel, and then select any scan job settings.
• Multi-Item setting in the HP app (computer, mobile device)
• 
• Click Scan or the circle button at the bottom of the screen.
• In the preview window, select options to add, reorder, rotate, edit, replace, or delete items. You may have to click the Menu icon to see all options.
• Select an option to save, print, share, or fax the scan file.
