the scanning does not work any longer since the moment I have installed VPN on the MacBook Air, 

I have removed the VPN program but the scanning still does not work.  printer is doing fine

I highly doubt you will be able to scan over a VPN, such connectivity is likely too limited to allow the required network protocols for scanning.  I would request you to reach out to our HP Smart Friend Support and our Support Engineers should be able to sort this out.
