The top-loading paper tray is a regular paper intake tray meant to be used for printing.
The printer lacks (does not have) an automatic document feeder (ADF) that would be used for loading and scanning multiple sheets of paper at a time.
You can use the printer to scan -- you have to load one sheet at a time on the flatbed. Each side must be scanned manually, starting with the first page then flipping to scan the second.
True -- this method is not ideal.

2-sided printing is also a manual operation.
