@Scarlettgunna, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue with your HP DeskJet 2300 on your iMac:

Check Printer Connection

USB Cable: Make sure the USB cable between the printer and the iMac is firmly connected and not damaged. If you have another USB cable, try switching to see if that resolves the issue.

USB Port: Try plugging the printer into a different USB port on your iMac.

Restart Printer & iMac

Restart the Printer: Turn off your printer, wait for 10-15 seconds, then turn it back on. Check if the power button stops blinking.

Restart the iMac: Restart your Mac to reset any temporary software glitches or connection issues.

Check Printer Status in macOS

Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.

Ensure that your HP DeskJet 2300 is listed. If it’s not, you might need to add it by clicking the + button.

If it’s listed, but it says "Idle," try selecting the printer and clicking "Open Print Queue" to check the status. If there are any stuck print jobs, cancel them and try again.

Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers

Sometimes macOS doesn’t automatically detect all printer drivers. Download the latest drivers directly from HP’s website:

HP DeskJet 2300 All-in-One Printer series Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support

Once downloaded, install the drivers and follow the prompts to complete the installation.

After installing, go back to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, and check if the printer appears and is no longer idle.

Reset Printing System

If the printer still shows as "Idle," you can reset the printing system:

Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.

Right-click (or Control-click) on the printer list and select Reset printing system.

After that, re-add your printer by clicking the + button.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
