HP Deskjet F4180 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi Guys - I removed the printer software for my HP Deskjet F4100 All in one series (the printer had worked well for several years) but on rebooting the pc the message appeared "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package "TrayApp.msi" in the box below. Use source C:\users\knowhow.....etc

The file can't be found anywhere on my system. I do not have a CD with the software as it was downloaded and when I tried to get a copy from HP, the support resource has been withdrawn,

So, all I need is a copy of the file: trayApp.msi to stop the flaming error message. It appears on every screen I use and if I try to cancel it Windows comes up with the message that it is trying to configure trayapp but never gets further than about 25%!

Will any version of trayapp.msi do to fill the gap or how do I get one to clear this error message please?

Hi @Hector111,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding error message on your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

The TrayApp.msi error is common after uninstalling HP printer software because the system is still looking for the missing installation package. Since HP has withdrawn support for older printers like the Deskjet F4100, the file is no longer available directly from their site. However, you can resolve the issue with the following steps:

Cancel the Pop-up Permanently (Using Task Manager)

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Look for TrayApp under the Processes tab.
  • Right-click it and select End Task.
  • Restart your PC and check if the pop-up disappears.

If the error still appears, move to the next steps.

Remove TrayApp from Startup (Using MSConfig)

  • Press Win + R, type msconfig, and hit Enter.
  • Go to the Startup tab (On Windows 10/11, open Task Manager → Startup).
  • Look for TrayApp or any HP-related entry and disable it.
  • Click OK and restart the computer.

Use Windows Installer Cleanup Utility

Since TrayApp is trying to install itself without the required MSI file, you need to remove its broken entry from Windows.

Steps:

  • Download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility from Microsoft’s official archive.
  • Open the tool and look for any HP-related entries.
  • Select them and click Remove.
  • Restart your PC and check if the issue is resolved.

Delete TrayApp Registry Entries (Advanced Users)

If the error persists, you can manually remove its registry keys.

Steps:

  1. Press Win + R, type regedit, and hit Enter.
  2. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  3. Look for an entry related to TrayApp or HP, right-click it, and select Delete.
  4. Close the Registry Editor, restart your PC, and check if the error is gone.

Reinstall HP Printer Software

If you still need to use your HP Deskjet F4100, reinstalling the software might fix the issue.

  • Download the last available driver from a trusted source like CNET or Softpedia (HP no longer provides official downloads).
  • Install it, then uninstall it again properly via Control Panel → Programs and Features.

Perform a System File Check (If the Issue Persists)

If none of the above methods work, some Windows files may be corrupted.

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
  • Type the following command and hit Enter: sfc /scannow
  • Wait for the scan to complete and restart your PC.

After following these steps, the TrayApp.msi error should no longer appear. Let me know if you need further help! 😊

Hi Kuroi

Thanks so much for your excellent help. The error message has gone at last!

The solutions you suggested were clear and easy to follow, I am so grateful. There was an HP entry found in Task Manager - Start up, I disabled it, restarted the system and all was well. I had received advice elsewhere that I would just have to accept the continuous error messages as it was complex issue.

Anyway, brilliant - thanks.

I do apologise for not replying earlier but both your emails had been treated as spam and I only found them today.

Best wishes
