Hi @Richard1353,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Smart Tank 5100 printer is having trouble accepting paper to print. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Check paper type and size

Make sure you are using plain, good-quality paper within the supported size range (A4, Letter, etc.).

Avoid wrinkled, damp, or curled sheets as they can block feeding.

Load paper correctly

Fan the stack of paper to prevent sheets from sticking together.

Insert the stack into the input tray until it stops, then adjust the paper guides snugly against the edges.

Inspect the input tray

Remove the paper and check for any debris, torn pieces, or dust inside the tray.

Clean the tray area if needed before reloading paper.

Check paper guides

Ensure the side and front guides are not too tight or too loose.

Guides that press too hard can prevent paper from feeding, while loose guides cause misfeeds.

Clean the paper feed rollers

Turn off the printer and unplug it.

Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water to clean the rollers inside the input tray.

Let them dry completely before reloading paper.

Try a smaller stack of paper

Load 10–20 sheets instead of a full stack.

Overloading the tray can cause feeding problems.

Reset the printer

Power off the printer, unplug it for 60 seconds, then plug it back in and restart.

This clears any paper feed error states.

I hope this helps.
