hp envy inspire 7955e
Microsoft Windows 11

I'm assisting my dad remotely with his HP Envy Inspire 7955e all-in-one printer. He likes to print photos that he gets in his email and Word or Excel documents. He always wants to print the photos on photo paper at 5x7 and documents at 8.5x11. He has to switch paper in the paper tray and has to set the paper guides correctly or it won't print, gets an error saying no paper in the tray but it definitely is there.  There appear to be myriad settings that have to be in sync. Printer properties, printer preferences and settings on the printer itself. I'm trying to simplify the setting changes so that he can do this without me assisting (not that I mind at all) but he needs to be in control and not have to wait for me to get online with him.

We changed the settings in multiple locations to be photo paper, 5x7, and successfully printed several photos. But when we went back and changed the settings for 8.5x11, we kept getting errors saying there was no paper in the tray. But of course, there is paper there and the correct type. I'm at my wit's end trying to get this changed so he can print out a page. Any advice on how to get this to work would be much appreciated.

Hi @Greg771143,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating situation involving the HP Envy Inspire 7955e printer. Here’s a step-by-step approach to streamline the process of switching between photo and document printing, reducing the errors and ensuring a smoother experience.

Set Up Paper Trays:

  • Dedicated Trays: If possible, use separate trays for photo paper and regular paper. This way, you can keep both types of paper loaded without having to switch them frequently.
  • Check Paper Guides: Ensure the paper guides in both trays are correctly set to fit the paper size you are using (5x7 for photo paper, 8.5x11 for documents).

Configure Printer Settings:

  • Printer Preferences:
    1. Go to Devices and Printers on the computer.
    2. Right-click on the HP Envy Inspire 7955e printer and select Printer Properties.
    3. Click on the Preferences button.
    4. Set the default paper size to 8.5x11 and paper type to Plain Paper for documents.
    5. Save the settings.
  • Photo Printing Settings:
    1. Whenever you print photos, go back into Printer Preferences.
    2. Change the paper size to 5x7 and the paper type to Photo Paper.
    3. Confirm the settings before printing.

Adjust Print Settings in Applications:

  • In Word or Excel: Before printing, ensure the document settings are aligned with the printer settings:
    • Go to File > Print.
    • Click on Printer Properties and ensure the selected paper size and type match what is loaded in the tray.

Disable Automatic Paper Type Detection (if applicable):

  • Sometimes, the printer’s automatic paper detection feature can cause issues. You can try turning this off in the printer settings.

Regularly Update Printer Firmware and Drivers:

  • Ensure that the printer’s firmware is up to date. Sometimes, connectivity or compatibility issues can arise from outdated software.

Error Messages:

  • If an error persists indicating "no paper in the tray," check:
    • Paper Size Settings: Ensure that the paper size selected in the application matches the paper size set in the printer preferences.
    • Paper Orientation: Make sure the paper is loaded correctly (e.g., face down or up, depending on the printer specifications).
    • Paper Quality: Occasionally, if the paper type does not match what’s selected in the settings, it can cause errors.

Consider Presets:

  • If your printer software allows, create presets for both photo and document printing. This way, he can quickly switch between them without manually changing every setting.

Test Prints:

  • After making adjustments, run a couple of test prints for each type (photo and document) to ensure everything is functioning smoothly.

By setting up these configurations and routines, your friend should be able to print photos and documents more easily without needing assistance each time.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
