Hi @James738,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how stressful it feels when your HP Envy 6500e suddenly shows “Your printer has experienced an unexpected configuration problem” and refuses to print. This is a very common Windows/HP Smart error, and the good news is that it can be fixed with a few simple steps. Let’s take this slowly, one step at a time.

Step 1: Restart Your Printer, Computer, and Wi‑Fi

HP recommends restarting all devices to clear stuck configuration data.

  1. Turn the printer OFF
  2. Unplug it for 30 seconds
  3. Restart your computer
  4. Restart your router
  5. Turn the printer back ON

Try to print again.

Step 2: Run Windows Update

HP’s instructions show that this error often appears when Windows has pending updates or incomplete components.

On your PC:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Go to Windows Update
  3. Tap Check for updates
  4. Install everything available
  5. Restart your computer

Try to print again.

Step 3: Remove and Re‑Add the Printer in Windows

This is the most reliable fix according to HP.
HP’s video demonstrates removing the printer and adding it again to clear configuration errors.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Go to Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners
  3. Select your HP Envy 6500e
  4. Tap Remove
  5. Restart your computer
  6. Tap Add device
  7. Add the printer again

Test the printer using a simple document.

Step 4: Reset the HP Smart App

The HP Smart app sometimes holds old configuration data.

  1. Open HP Smart
  2. Remove the printer from the app
  3. Close HP Smart
  4. Reopen HP Smart
  5. Tap Set up a new printer
  6. Follow the on‑screen steps

HP Smart app triggers this specific configuration error when it fails to talk to Windows.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
