I'm at my wits end.
I'm a fairly savvy computer person and this has me stumped.
Win 10 64 bit
I have an 8610 and up until recently (perhaps just a few days ago) print and scan worked fine.
First noticed an issue trying to scan a document using the installed 8610 Printer Assistant.
I got "Scanner Communications cannot be established."
I've turned hardware off and on several times.
I've tried these fixes and two others...no success.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled driver package several times...after trying all the fixes.
The printer is found on the network but each install fails with "unsuccessful network installation".
Print and Scan Doctor wants to install the software and fails same as above.
The printer is found on my wireless network.
I can see AND ADD the printer in Devices and Printers.
The printer is THEN visible in Device Manager
I can scan ON the printer and send it to my laptop.
I can print to the printer from my laptop.
During the LAST attempt to install the 8610 software it is now unable to find the printer either by IP address or the host name.
The printer is clearly connected to my wireless network.
My wife's laptop still has the 8610 software installed.
She can print but trying to scan now also gets the "Scanner Communications cannot be established."

Hi @Shank236.
I'd like to help!
Let's try and uninstall the printer software from the root level on your PC and install the full feature printer software.
--->In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
--->Select your HP printer.
--->Select Uninstall.
--->In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
--->In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
--->Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
--->Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
--->Click on the Drivers tab.
--->Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click remove at the bottom.
--->Select OK.
--->Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
--->Close Devices and Printers.
And then reinstall the printer full-featured drivers from software and drivers page
If the issue persists,
Use HP Print and Scan Doctor to check connectivity
Download a special version of HP Print and Scan Doctor specifically created to help with printer offline conditions.
- Download HP Print and Scan Doctor.
- Run HPPSdr.exe from the download location on your computer.
- Once HP Print and Scan Doctor opens, click Start, and then select your printer.
- If your printer in not in the list, turn it off and on, and then click Retry.
- If there is a connection problem, follow the instructions in HP Print and Scan Doctor.
- If a screen prompts you to turn on printer updates, click Yes.
- If a screen prompts you to make your printer the default printer, click Yes.
Set a manual IP-
To set a manual IP and try the steps below -
--->Touch on the wifi icon ((i)) on the printer, and take down the IP address
--->Open a web browser (ex Chrome or Mozilla) and type in the printer's IP
--->then go to network ---> general ---> network protocols ---> select IPV4 only-->apply
--->go to wireless ---> wireless 802.11---> select manual ip ---> apply
--->Enter 8.8.8.8 for the first DNS and 8.8.4.4 for the second DNS.
--->then go to settings on the main ews page --> power management ---> select sleep mode to max 15min
Connect the printer to TCP/IP port- follow the below instructions-
--->Touch on the wifi icon ((i)) on the printer, and take down the IP address
a. Click Start/Devices and Printers. Right-click on your HP Printer. Select Printer Properties. Select the Ports tab at the top.
b. Select Add Port. Select Standard TCP/IP Port. Select New Port.
c. Follow the Add Port Wizard. Under Printer Name or IP Address, . Example: 192.168.1.15. The IP address will be copied under Port Name.
d. Select Next and Finish the Wizard.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hello Jay and thanks for your help.
Unfortunately no success yet. No matter what I try I keep failing the software install with "unsuccessful network installation." Note that I can find the printer on my lan (its always 192.168.0.3), add it manually and then print to it. I can only scan from/at the printer and send it to my laptop. I've also turned Norton off and tried install...same same.
One of these (the last I think) looped and added several iterations (1,2,3) of the printer which I removed and then added again in devices and printers

Try the below-suggested steps:-
Repair system files
Use the Microsoft System File Checker (SFC) utility to repair damaged or corrupt system files.
-
Close all open programs and apps running in Windows.
-
Search Windows for command, right-click command prompt from the list of search results, and then select Run as Administrator.
-
Type sfc /scannow in the command prompt, and then press Enter.
The Microsoft SFC utility attempts to find and repair any damaged or corrupt files.
-
If a Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations message displays, continue to the next step.
-
If a Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them message displays, continue with these steps.
-
If a Windows Resource Protect could not perform the requested operation or was unable to fix the corrupt files message displays, go to Use the System File Check tool to repair missing or corrupted system files (in English) for more information.
-
-
Try to install the HP driver and software again.
If the error message still displays, continue to the next step.
Use the Microsoft Fixit Solution
For computers with Windows 7 and later, Microsoft has released an automated solution that fixes installation problems.
Go to Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed (in English) to download and run the tool.
Keep me posted!

Hello Jay.
I've run system scans a couple times...all clean.
The fixit program was removed...cant download it.
Microsoft Easy Fix solutions have been discontinued
they say for W10 to now
- Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Select the type of troubleshooting you want to do, then select Run the troubleshooter.
Ran several of the relevant before .....it couldn't find anything wrong
Ran program compatibility troubleshooter for the 8610...it tried installing the package and failed w/ same comm error

Disconnect the LAN from the printer.
- Make sure the printer and the MAC are connected to the same wireless network.
- This printer supports only 2.4GHz network. So, the PC should be on the 2.4GHz network.
- If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both the networks.
- Restart the wireless router, the printer, and the PC
Check if you are able to access the printer's EWS page on the PC
- Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to obtain the IP address.
- Type the IP address at the top of your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
- If you get any security notification, click on show details/advanced and 'proceed to this website'.
- Try scanning and printing a test page.
Let me know how this goes.
