Windows Update wants me to update a driver for a printer I haven't used (or owned) for years. Not surprisingly, the update fails ... but the update file doesn't go away. How can I make that request-to-update disappear permanently?

The update is labeled "HP - Printer - 20.80.3.9568".

Use the windows "add or remove applications" to remove the old printer driviers.

If none show up then use the printui command tool

Run the following app from the command line

printui /s

Remove all references to the non-existent HP printer.

To remove from HP smart:

You have to sign in to your HP Account. Either the web (hpsmart.com) or bring up the app and click on the account icon.
Using either method you will end up at hpsmart.com anyway.

click on printer options, then click on Manage Printer Settings

Thank you so much!

The only kicker is that it took several restarts before that entry went away. Last thing I did last night before going to bed was (still) another restart, and when I got on this morning it was gone!

Hopefully, it'll stay away now. I removed all of the HP printer entries -- not just my own former one -- when I did the printui /s command.
