I am in a managed network school environment. District will not allow my HP Officejet 8130e on network. Thus I have to connect with MacBook Pro byUSB. Which is the seventh level of hell for HP users.
With Current MacOS 15.4.1 I cannot print at all. I remove printer. Add printer. I do all of the unplugging, diconnecting, restarting BS. And still.
Most often when I add a printer and select the 8130 it shows up as the 2.3 driver GLC. When this happens, If I click on print the status bar on the printer queue panel flashes by real quick like the data has been set to print. Then the 8130 chirps and rubs its hands together like it's ready tog o go. And then nothing. Nothing in the queue (green) but print is in use (orange).
Once in a while the driver shows up a 4.0. This works, but only appears once every 33 tries to add printer. Once it came up as 10.4! **bleep**?
I cannot update printer unless I take it and the MacBook to home and that network that won't block HP downloads.
SHORT OF THAT.
After following all of the BS abut the reconnecting, restarting, and unplugging, is there anything magic trick to get getting this offing printer to work?

@okdonkey, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with a very frustrating situation. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8130e:
Reset the Printing System:
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Right-click (or Control-click) in the printer list and select Reset printing system.
- This will remove all printers and scanners, and you can then add your HP OfficeJet Pro 8130e again.
Manually Add the Printer:
- In Printers & Scanners, click the + button to add a printer.
- Select your printer from the list, but before clicking Add, hold down the Option key to reveal the Advanced button.
- Click Advanced, and in the Type dropdown, select HP Jetdirect - Socket.
- Enter the printer's IP address (you might need to get this from the printer's settings menu).
- Click Add.
Use HP Smart App:
- Download and install the HP Smart app from the App Store.
- Use the app to add and manage your printer.
You may also, use Airprint - About AirPrint - Apple Support
AirPrint is a built-in printing solution for Mac, iPhone, and iPad. You can print from most apps that have a print feature.

I hope this helps.

I understand thru jet-socket.
i understand there is is an IP# in the printer.
how will this be used if I use HP Smart App that does not recognize USB? Is it because the jetsocket is the way the app can grab the IP# to add it?
if so when launching smart app do I add as new or existing? As wi-fi or Ethernet? Since no usb is supported?

None of the suggestions work with macOS 15.4.1 on a M4 Macbook Pro.
I reset printing
Manually add printer. There is no + button. Just add printer or scanner.
I click add printer. I select the 8130e.
Before clicking Add I press option key
No advanced button appears but goes direct to a window where I can check the "duplex" check box.
No other options appear in "advance"
When I look at driver list there is no "HP JetDirect Socket" driverno hp jet direct -socket listed. I uploaded image but your upload window truncates the left side.

How can I download the firmware update for the 8130? It seems I can connect to HP via Safari while on school network and it may allow me to download firmware update. But it blocks HP site if I am using my school chrome account.

@okdonkey, Thank you for your response.
If you can reach HP.com via Safari, you can manually download the firmware and driver, bypassing Chrome's restrictions.
Download the Latest HP Firmware and Driver
HP OfficeJet Pro 8130e Firmware:
Go directly via Safari to:
https://support.hp.com/drivers
Search for:
"HP OfficeJet Pro 8130e"
Direct Driver Page (Safari-only):
Look for:
- HP Easy Admin (to download offline installer)
- Or HP Printer Drivers for macOS v5.1 / v5.2 .pkg files
- You can install this .pkg without running HP Smart.
Installing via CUPS or lpadmin (Advanced)
“HP JetDirect - Socket” that's not a driver, but a protocol that only appears when adding via IP (not USB), and only when the printer is connected to a network. Since yours isn’t on the network, it won't show.
What You Can Do Right Now
On Home Wi-Fi (or Safari at school):
- Download: HP Printer Drivers for macOS (full .pkg offline installer)
- Also download: HP Easy Start just in case, though avoid using it directly on the M4
- Get the Firmware Updater if available for your 8130e
Install it offline on your MacBook at school:
- Double-click the .pkg
- Reboot
- Then go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners
- Add printer manually — this time the correct HP driver should be listed, not 2.3 GLC
Force CUPS to Use Correct PPD:
Open Terminal:
lpadmin -p HP8130 -E -v usb://HP/OfficeJet_Pro_8130e -P /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/HP\ OfficeJet\_Pro_8130e.gz
Try AirPrint
- If you absolutely cannot get the driver to load, you can try using:
- Generic PostScript Printer
- Or select the 8130e and choose “Use: AirPrint”
I hope this helps!
If my response resolves your issue, please click “Accepted Solution” to help others find the answer. Also, don’t forget to click the “Yes” button to say thanks!
Take care and have a great day.

The direct driver page is a 404. Thanks for that. There is no access for HP Easy Admin, either Do you guys even check this BS yourself?.
Also I tried the terminal maybe I did it wrong but got the message that "printer drivers are deprecated"

S what's the point of unplugging everything and shlepping the laptop and the printer home when there are no drivers, or no working links to a firmware update available?
Your pages just send one back to the add your OS and version and then the same old instructions that do not work.
This is not a product but a kluge. Shame on HP. And shame on the Support team for not keeping current. Instead of just telling hey this isn't going to work for you. Ha ha. You take me down the primrose path. Oooh there a log over there, sir. Go to it and bend over.
