HP DeskJet 4220e All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I cant install the printer on windows 7. i even tried the universal driver but that program shuts down before finishing.

The PC only sees the printer as a scanner.

Can this be done? if so can someone provide a link to a driver that will work please.

Hi @trevorp123,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP DeskJet 4220e All-In-One Printer does not officially support Windows 7, as HP designed it to be compatible with more recent operating systems (Windows 8.1, 10, 11, and MacOS). However, there are a few potential workarounds you can try:

1. Use a Basic Driver for Older Models

  • Download the HP DeskJet 1110 series or DeskJet 2600 series basic drivers, which are known to sometimes work with unsupported DeskJet models on older systems.
  • Visit HP's Official Support Site and search for one of these series for Windows 7.

2. Attempt Compatibility Mode

  • Download the latest driver for a newer version of Windows from HP's website.
  • Right-click the installer file, go to Properties, and select the Compatibility tab.
  • Choose Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 7.
  • Try running the installation again.

3. Universal Print Driver Alternatives

  • If HP’s Universal Print Driver (UPD) is crashing:
    1. Uninstall any partially installed printer drivers or HP Smart from your computer.
    2. Restart the PC and download the PostScript or PCL6 Universal Print Driver from HP's Universal Print Driver Page.
    3. Install it again in compatibility mode, following the steps above.

4. Manual Installation as a Printer

If Windows 7 recognizes the printer only as a scanner:

  • Open Devices and Printers in the Control Panel.
  • Click Add a Printer, choose Add a Local Printer, and select the port the printer is using.
  • Click Windows Update (this will take some time).
  • After the update, look for drivers compatible with DeskJet models like 2620 or 3630 and install them.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
